Severe obesity can have a profound emotional and physical impact. Being overweight puts you at risk for many of the leading causes of death, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, diabetes, urinary incontinence, knee and hip pain, and kidney disease.
When conservative methods of weight loss, such as changes in diet, increased exercise or medications have proved to be unsuccessful, bariatric weight loss surgery offered at Surgical Specialists of Charlotte may be a good alternative to improve both your overall health, mobility, and quality of life. Our comprehensive weight loss surgery program could allow you to be more physically active, take fewer prescription medications, and add years to your life.
Manthan Makadia, MD, FACS
Board-certified surgeon, Manthan Makadia, MD, FACS, is fellowship-trained in bariatric surgery and one of only a few surgeons in the region using the latest robotic surgery technology to perform gastric bypass and vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Based on his expertise, Dr. Makadia will determine if you are a candidate for bariatric surgery and explain which procedure best fits your individual situation. He will also take the time to explain your options, educate you about weight loss surgery, and answer any questions you may have. Dr. Makadia performs weight loss surgery at Piedmont Medical Center in Fort Mill.
A Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Program
We offer an individualized approach and customized treatment plan for each patient. After a complete assessment, Dr. Makadia will determine if you are a candidate for surgery, and recommend which surgical option might be best for you. The two types of bariatric surgery performed by Dr. Makadia are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. The goal of both procedures is to reduce your weight by restricting the amount of food that your stomach can hold, and/or by limiting the amount of nutrients your body can absorb.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
During the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, Dr. Makadia removes approximately 80% of the stomach, creating a long, banana-shaped “sleeve.” The remaining stomach pouch is much smaller and can only hold a small amount of food. The smaller stomach causes you feel full much sooner when eating, and ultimately decreases the amount of food you consume, which then leads to weight loss. Sleeve gastrectomy requires no changes to the intestines. The procedure may cause favorable changes in gut hormones that suppress hunger and reduce appetite.
Gastric Bypass (Roux en Y)
During the gastric bybass surgery, Dr. Makadia will create a small pouch by dividing the top part of the stomach from the rest of the stomach. The small intestine will also be separated into two parts. The bottom portion of the divided small intestine will be brought up and surgically connected directly to the new small stomach pouch. The remaining portion of the small intestine is then connected further down on the portion of the intestine connected to the small stomach pouch. This allows the stomach acids and digestive enzymes in the lower part of the stomach to them be mixed with food that is being consumed.
The Latest Robotic Surgery Technology
Dr. Manthan Makadia performs bariatric weight loss surgery for patients of Surgical Specialists of Charlotte using the da Vinci robotic-assisted system. During the procedure, Dr. Makadia sits at a console in the operating room and uses the robotic controls to make very small incisions and uses a high definition camera for a magnified, crystal-clear view of the surgical area. In general, robotic-assisted procedures can result in fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times.
